History

The property in Toowong on which St John’s is built was originally owned by Mr & Mrs Moxon, whose daughter, Mrs Briggs, gifted her parents' home to the Diocese in 1932 for “use as a home in connection with the Church’s social work”.  The name St John’s was chosen to honour St John’s Cathedral.  In 1932, St John’s was opened to house men who are over the age of 60 and who would otherwise be homeless or are in need of care.

Today

Built on two levels on the corner of Orchard and Exmouth Streets, St John’s offers 64 single rooms. Each level has its own lounge, dining room and kitchen, and every bedroom has air-conditioning, a large wardrobe, shelf storage, a set of drawers, a television antenna outlet as well as a telephone outlet. St John’s includes special accommodation for people with dementia.

A central block contains the offices and canteen, and the main kitchen and laundry. There is a large community area with ample space for all residents to meet together and enjoy activity programs.

  • A Diversional Therapist ensures there are activities available across 7 days to keep minds and bodies active;
  • Our Music Therapist offers group therapy and one on one sessions;
  • A physiotherapist is accessible each day of the week.

Our residents can access the services of a visiting podiatrist and a hairdresser.  There is a doctor on call.
