Your Path: Home | help us to help others | Volunteers
Volunteers are an integral part of Spiritus Care Services and are a valued part of the team, contributing to every facet of what we do: aged care residential services, community health, social services, corporate services and management. Volunteering enables people from diverse backgrounds and all ages to become actively involved in the community while developing and learning new skills, or utilising existing skills.

Volunteers are supported through coordinated programs offering orientation, on-going training and supervision and are valued members of the team of Spiritus Care Services staff.  Volunteer Services as a whole is managed by the Manager Volunteer Services, within Human Resources Support Services. Volunteers are coordinated and supervised by staff in the service with which they volunteer.

What do our volunteers do?

It could be quicker to ask “What don’t they do?” More than 700 volunteers assist in 45+ services, contributing more than 50,000 hours annually to the services we provide, in a huge variety of roles. Volunteers contribute to the quality of life, self esteem and community connectedness or our clients and residents through providing or help with activities (crafts, bingo and so on), advocacy, child care support, client liaison, complementary therapies (massage, for instance), chaplaincy, cooking, counselling, gardening, homeless program support, homework support, hospital visiting, outings, legal support, library assistance, one-on-one visiting, palliative care, personal care, pets, sewing and transport.

Volunteers are allies of clients living with mental illness or disability, facilitators of client support groups, foster carers, supervisors of workshops, dancers, entertainers, musicians, English and literacy tutors and more.

Other volunteer contribute to our services indirectly but are equally as valuable. They volunteer on Advisory and Reference Committees, help with a  huge range of administration tasks, car washing, gardening and maintenance at our centres, make playground equipment, raise funds for our services and facilities, staff bookstores, help with marketing gnad promotion, undertake research, providing training to both staff and volunteers, and provide support to other volunteers. They also participate in special events such as staffing display stalls, wrapping Christmas presents and making and selling red ribbons for World AIDS Day.

Who are our volunteers? What do they look like? Well, they’re probably aged somewhere between 12 and 90. The have paid employment (full or part-time) or are retired, looking for work, raising their families, on disability pensions or studying (or combination of those). They may have minimal education, a PhD, or something in between. Their skills, interests, languages, religions and cultures are hugely varied. Their motivation for volunteers varies also: to help others, to use or develop skills, to gain experience, to meet other people, because they have time available, to do something different, to give back to their community.

What do our volunteers have in common? All contribute their time and talents to help us help others. A successful program has the right volunteer doing the right task in the right place: right for the volunteer, right for the client or resident, and right for the organisation.
