The Anglican Church in Brisbane has offered its support to residents affected by the catastrophic Queensland floods.
Brisbane Archbishop Phillip Aspinall said the church was ready to help and teams are now in place working with Brisbane’s Lord Mayor’s Office and Red Cross.
“Every broadcast brings more news of devastation and awesome destruction. We have been humbled by the magnitude of the damage the floods have caused,” Archbishop Aspinall said.
“We stand ready to support everyone who has lost loved ones, homes, possessions and livelihoods. Clergy have been working with their communities providing support and care where necessary.”
Archbishop Aspinall said the effects of the disaster would be felt for many months.
“It is okay to be confused about God’s part in all of this. God understands and is actually with us in the mess we’re struggling with. We are not alone,” he said.
“It is important that we keep in touch with each other through it all. Helping hands and prayers are also important. Through adversity and disasters like this come sadness, hopelessness and despair. But there is also the reality of generosity, love, service, determination and care.”
The Archbishop paid tribute to emergency personnel working to keep communities safe. The Archbishop’s office has been in close communication with the Lord Mayor Campbell Newman’s office all day today coordinating available Anglican Parishes, Schools, Staff and Volunteers for emergency accommodation throughout Brisbane before the Brisbane River reaches its peak at 4am Thursday morning.
The Anglican Church’s caring arm, Spiritus, has provided staff to assist the Red Cross in managing and operating evacuation centres...
“Peoples’ generosity is heartwarming. When the chips are down it’s amazing and moving how much people are prepared to do. Archbishop Aspinall said.
“We give thanks for the selfless efforts of the members of the Lord Mayor’s Office, SES, police, fire and rescue personnel, Red Cross volunteers and everyone who has helped a friend, family member or neighbour.
“Throughout this ordeal many unsung heroes have stepped up to assist others without any thought of recognition let alone a reward. This is close to the heart of the Christian way. Jesus emphasized that love of neighbor goes hand in hand with love of God."
