Spiritual and Pastoral Care

Spiritus considers the provision of Spiritual and Pastoral Care services an essential component of all services and facilities. As a caring ministry of the Anglican Church, Spiritus affirms that each person is created in the image of God, is unique, and is of infinite worth.

Spiritual and Pastoral care embraces an approach to health care and ageing that is holistic and person-centered. It offers an opportunity to share and reflect on the events and challenges of life in an environment of trust and confidentiality. Spiritual and Pastoral Care addresses issues that may involve questioning and acknowledging the meaning of life, including self-worth, relationships and belonging. Responding to the emotional or spiritual needs during a time of illness, change or loss often enables people to reflect at a deeper spiritual level.

Spiritus acknowledges and supports spiritual and cultural diversity and offers appropriate spiritual care for people from other faith traditions and supports those who profess no faith. It recognises that people have physical, emotional, spiritual and psychosocial needs, and acknowledges the importance of the provision of Spiritual and Pastoral Care to clients, residents and their families.

The Spiritual and Pastoral care team is led by an experienced pastoral care practitioner and includes Pastoral Care Coordinators, Pastoral Care Volunteers, Visiting Clergy of various faiths, and other Pastoral Visitors. As an integral part of the health care team they both complement and contribute to the overall holistic care provided to staff, clients, residents, and their families.

Pastoral Services are available to staff, clients, residents and their families inclusive of all cultures and regardless of religious or spiritual orientation. Referrals can be made by any member of staff or clients and residents may request to see a Pastoral Care Worker.

The Spiritual and Pastoral Care team can also facilitate access to clergy and religious communities, religious rites and bereavement support.
